Buried Bestiary

The Buried Bestiary is an illustration project featuring original creatures. The style is reminiscent of mezzotint engraving.

Buried Bestiary is a series of 8 illustrations featured in a lost journal look. The journal has entries stating the creatures' information, behaviors, threat level, and a possible solution to the danger. Most of these are dangerous creatures that could exist—but luckily do not. This project had a focus on textures, realism, writing, and a mezzotint look.

Development

The Buried Bestiary's development was not a straightforward one. Initially, a few ideas felt flat and lacked substance or a scare factor. Over time and with some criticism from my peers, I was able to take each idea and give it something. Some illustrations were creepy, some were unsettling to look at, and a few even look cute. The transition from physical to digital in this project was rough at first, but I got a good handle on it after some time.
